Why am I getting battery over temperature messages?

Why am I getting battery over temperature messages

Even when it's on charge it keeps popping up saying its over temperature and I should either snooze or dismiss. I switched off the phone and have been charging it for over 2 hours, it's still 1% charged

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Is it actually getting really hot, or does it remain cool? If it does get really hot, then the battery is probably failing and needs to be replaced. If it remains cool, then there may be a problem with the sensors (which can especially happen with water damage).
