Why am I not able to add/modify contacts after Marsmellow update?

Hello people,

The stock Google contacts doesn't allow me to view, add or delete any contacts. Using another app helped view the contacts but I still can't add a new contact. I have to add on Google contacts and then sync.

The error message says "You have disabled a required permission". The Contacts Storage's permission section is disabled(it says no permissions requested). So I haven't changed or can't change any permissions. The other sections such as storage are accessible.

I added a new user and it works fine. This clearly shows the owner permissions are messed up. How do I reset permissions for the owner?

Thanks

Welcome to Android Central! Did you also look at the Contacts app's permissions in Settings>Apps? Not just the Contact Storage app.

Hi B.Diddy ! Thanks for the reply.

Yes, the Contacts app's permission is not grayed out and has all access permissions unlike the contacts storage app.

As I said, when I switch to a guest user the contacts storage app permission is available for changes. This is the root of the issue which was caused after the marshmallow update. The owner permissions are messed up graying out the contact storage permission.

Go to Settings>Security>Device Administrators. Is anything unusual there, besides Android Device Manager?

Also, try going to Settings>Security>Clear Credentials.

There was nothing unusual there. I tried several ideas and nothing seemed to work.

So I did a factory reset and its working smoother than ever.

Thank you for your suggestions!

When I went to this it was greyed out is that supposed to be that way or is that considered unusual?

Welcome to Android Central! Do you mean that the Clear Credentials part is greyed out? There might not be any credentials to clear, I suppose.

Hi Ak, go to Settings>Apps>Contacts>Permissions and enable all of them to fix the issue.
