Why are my contact's photos suddenly in small circles?

Just recently on my Samsung Galaxy s9+ the contact photos (that I assigned) only show up in small circles. Even when I pull up the entire contact, all the info is there just fine, but the contact photo is in a small circle and the quality looks terrible. Up until recently the photos filled practically half of the screen. The images are of high resolution and worked perfectly before. Now even when someone calls me, it's a small circle and the photo is of horrible quality. Is there a way I can change this, because it's really annoying?

you can't change that on the stock dialer app.
you can try a different dialer app from play store

I know exactly what you mean and am totally frustrated by it. It only seems to do this to a few of my contacts, but it is always the same ones.
I edit the contact, give them a picture that takes up half the screen. It stays there for some indiscriminate time and then reverts to a circle again.
I tried using one of the many HD full screen caller apps, but have not found one that either fixes the issue, or for those contacts who i don't have great images of (those I'm not too fussed about), look like crap.
Would love to know if you found some sort of solution.
