Why are my photos all pixelated?

I updated my Galaxy S6 edge last night to android version 5.1.1, and now all the photos in my gallery and the photos I see on Facebook are altered. The darker parts of the images have this sort of rainbow pixelated effect added to them. The appearance of the home screen hasnt changed at all, just when I try to view an image.

Welcome to Android Central! What happens if you copy one of those photos to your computer via USB--does it look normal there?

Update: it resolved the problem for probably an hour, then the issue started to re-occur

See if it persists in the Gallery app if you boot into Safe Mode. This can tell you if a 3rd party app is the culprit. https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-21007

Are the Facebook photos you're looking at stored in the Facebook cloud, or did you download them locally?

I wonder if you should try reinstalling the firmware using Smart Switch.
