why are notifications not showing on lock screen?

I have checked just about all the settings but no luck on how to be able to see my notifications on my lock screen, why is it when I get a phone call it shows up on the lock screen but nothing else will like my calendar events or my emails ect... Does anyone know?

On Android 6+ Marshmallow, the usual setting sequence to show notifications on lock screen is:

Settings --> Sound & notification --> When device is locked --> Show all notification content.

Every article I find says to go to Settings > Sounds and Notifications > While Locked.

On my phone, there is no "Sounds and Notifications" under Settings. I have "Sounds and Vibrations" and a separate option "Notifications." Also, there is no "While Locked" option under either one. What is going on? I have the latest Marshmallow version.

i may be Necro-ing a thread but this hasnt been answered and new people like me with this same problem still search this in google and it sends me to this thread! so im going to answer the question...

you need to go to settings > lock screen and security > notifications (toggle on)
