Why cant I boot into Recovery mode?

I am using a samsung galaxy note 2 and I have been trying to get into recovery mode by doing volume up + home + power but it just leads me to a screen that says "downloading do not turn off target".
please help.

I doubt that the Note 2 forum is still active so I’ll move this to the Note 8 forum. If those guys don’t understand your problem, no-one will.

Just wait when that screen comes on. Once it doesn't detect an update it will change to the bootloader screen.

This is the correct screen..have you let it settle to a recovery screen or complete the action or do you turn it off immediately and restart your device

correct. my s7 took a couple minutes to get to the screen, my note 8 about 20 seconds

it's probably the volume button has gotten a bit wonky over the years, try a few times and it will eventually work, battery out fot 30 seconds and try from there
