I'm on 4.4.2 on an LG L90, (AKA an LGD415-RD). Regardless of the application being used, if I type

I swear I never typed that. If I type a space, of course, it picks up that silly correction, which is usually not what I want. So, I want to get rid of the single-quoted suggestion.
I googled and found that, reportedly, press-and-hold will display a menu with options to delete the suggested, targeted word, but when I press-and-hold I don't get that--I get nothing. I've tried the press-and-hold-to-delete when the word was capitalized, when it wasn't capitalized, when the suggestion was highlighted on the suggestion ribbon, and when it wasn't highlighted. Nothing. It's still there, Jim.
I've looked at the menu, too, and no joy.
So, I went one better: I'd outsmart the OS by creating my own shortcut for the sequence, verify the sequence as a shortcut, then delete the shortcut. That would totally clear it off my system, or so I thought.
Going to my personal dictionary for all languages, trying to type a single quote into the field to define the string throws an
Invalid character
error. The field still displays the single quote, but any additional letters never result in the Save button becoming active. The single quote is somehow blocking the creation of the shortcut. (ObCounting comment: if I try to make a shortcut without any single quotes in it, the SAVE button remains greyed out until there are two, valid characters in the field. That sort of makes sense, but just in case that behavior were to be out-of-the-ordinary for any reason, I'm including it here as a possible, additional clue.)
One more symptom. None of my shortcuts work. Oh, sure, I can make them, and they're saved and listed, but when I go back to an app and type a shortcut cue, well, I only get the shortcut cue. It never expands to the larger shortcut string. I wondered if there was a checkbox somewhere that I needed to select or deselect that allows the replacement or prevents the substitution, but I couldn't find anything.
I typed a garbage word, touched the garbage word in the ribbon, got the notification to touch it again to add it to my dictionary, found the garbage word in the dictionary, went back to the ribbon and tried to press-and-hold to delete it, but no go. I then deleted the garbage word from the dictionary, and its suggested correction appropriately disappeared from the correction ribbon.
Whew!
It almost sounds to me as though I need to backup and restore my 4.4.2. When strange things like this are happening, it's not worth tracking it down, when a frontal lobotomy generally cures the patient.
Oh, does it matter that my Google Now continually drops my app icons, or is that still a known problem, and one unrelated to my shortcut issue here?
Thanks.
