Why can't i drop down my history and go back to it

[Android Central Question]

Ok, i don't know what the terminology is so it's difficult to explain. My phone (VFD 710) yesterday ran a software update, all installed fine etc. However, now when i'm browsing, op opening apps, before i used to be able to close them, but still have them available to go back to, by just pressing the middle button at the bottom and all my history would be there. But now since this update, i can close whatever i'm looking at (normally by hitting middle bottom button) but when i hit the bottom right button, to bring up what i've been looking at, nothing happens. Hopefully this makes sense to someone and can help me fix it. I don't want to do a factory reset. Thanks!

Which phone?
Which version of android?
Which carrier?

Are we talking about the browsing history in a web browser?
Or the navigation bar with the buttons for "notifications", "home screen", "back arrow", "recent apps", etc ???
