Nexus 7 not getting past Google screen

Hi Guys,

First post on here, from a complete Nexus novice.

Problem I have, is that my tablet would turn on, and reach the black Google screen, then onto the coloured 'wirly' icons, where it would then remain, and unresponsive, until the battery lost charge. Trying all sorts of holds on various buttons as suggested just took it back to the black screen/wirly screen, then no further. Removed battery for a short period too, after reading this might have an effect.....no difference.

Oh, also tried holding start/volume buttons to get to reboot screen, but just got an android lying on back with "no command" written on it.

Any thoughts........HELP !!!!!

Is it modified (rooted, custom recovery etc.)? You seem to be in a bootloop. If you are running the stock ROM, it would be easiest to reinstall through the factory images unless you can get into the recovery. Can you?

No it's not modified. By holdingthe start and volume buttons, I can get to the screen offering me options like recovery/reboot/start, but when accessing those there is no further response/options.

From this screen, you need to hold power button then quickly hit vol+ for a few seconds. Release buttons. (https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/4596836?hl=en). Getting that button combo can be tricky so if it doesn't work first time, keep trying.
Choose factory reset.

This just happened to me yesterday. My device was sitting on the charger and randomly rebooted. Its been stuck on the Google screen. My Nexus 7 is stock, still on 4.4.4 KitKat and is not rooted.

I booted into recovery mode. Attempting to wipe the cache partition keeps failing. Nor can I do I factory reset. Keep getting this message if I try to do either. Very frustrating. Anyone have any suggestions?

I guess you've done the long hold on power to reboot--several times. I'm not sure it will work without ADB turned on in developers options, but you could try Wug's toolkit. http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/. It will attempt to install required drivers then try to reflash your OS files.

Re: Nexus 7 not getting past Google screen

Funny enough, I'm having this same exact issue.

I cannot reinstall the factory images through fastboot because the bootloader is still locked.
When trying to do a factory reset on the device, the "E:failed to mount /cache (Invalid argument)" jargon appears.
I posted this on reddit and it seems that the flash storage eMMC might be corrupted and causing this issue. It's a hardware issue that cannot be fixed through software. Bizarre Nexus 7 issue - red exclamation mark : Nexus7

I called ASUS customer service and they said I would need to do an RMA. What sucks even further is that I am definitely out of warranty. I wonder how much this will cost.

I read about this as it seems to have cropped up a lot lately. If this is your problem, rma is the only way. Just wondering if you tried fastboot oem unlock.

Re: Nexus 7 not getting past Google screen

Hey guys, I talked to ASUS today and I will have to do an RMA. The rep said it will cost me $100 to get them to reload the Android OS on it. I'm so pissed. I've barely had it a year and its already died on me. I hate to say it, but if this was an iPad I would've had it working by now. I would've just gone in to an Apple store. Maybe I would have to pay for something, but even so that's a lot easier than having to pack up my Nexus 7 and ship it off somewhere. I don't have $100 laying around, especially during the holiday times. My nexus experience is kinda ruined now.

I had the same problem when I first got 5.0.1. I sent my tablet in with a quote of up to $200 for repair. The latest status of my RMA indicates that it was repaired and is to be shipped out so they may have fixed my device for free. We'll see what happens when I get my device back.

That's a shame.

I have a Google Nexus 7 2012 16GB WiFi Only tablet (Lollipop 5.0 OTA updated in November 2014) which started behaving strangely all of a sudden. On pressing the power key the display comes up and goes blank again. I switched off the device by holding the power button (long enough to switch off the device) and when I switched on ... the Google Logo comes up ... then after 3 seconds the tablet restarts again into an infinite loop. I finally had to remove the battery to switch off the device.

I bought this device in US (sometime in October 2012) so I am out of warranty. The Google/ASUS Service here in India is not that encouraging for me to carry an out of warranty item for repair. I am aware of the risks involved in flashing device software and it would be the last option (I can’t afford ASUS/Google Service pricing model which seems very expensive).
So suspecting the power button cable … I checked both the cable as well as the connector on the motherboard and I have pasted the image here along with my findings with the continuity tester.
Can someone tell me if the button power socket and button cable is OK or NOT.
Thank you in advance for your advice and help.
Venkat

I had the same thing happen. I called Google and they said to call asus for an RMA repair. They said that since it was not a hardware failure but an OS failure, there would be No charge even though it is out of warranty. I shipped my Nexus in and will see what happens.

This is interesting news msross. I am also convinced that it is software, but didn't know that that would allow a free repair out of warranty. What number did you call and did you "wipe" the device? If so, how?

Re: Nexus 7 not getting past Google screen

Zackmack7, I received my device repaired and free of charge from Asus. It's the same device I sent back with all the nicks and dings.Asus appeared to have replaced the USB and CPU board when they returned my device.
