why can't i hear my message notifcations

I don't know when my messages come through cause It doesn't make a noise when I receive them and my notification is turned up but still doesn't make the message noise

and I own a
Samsung galaxy s6 edge plus

Welcome to Android Central! Does this only occur when you're within that message conversation in the Messaging app? Or also when you're doing something else?

Open the Messaging app, tap Menu>Settings, look for the notification option, and make sure the tone isn't set to Silent or None.
