it just jumps from 50% to 100%. on my other phone i can see 0% to 100% depending on how hard the processor is working. what is going on?

Welcome to AC!
Using 3rd party apps to monitor processor speed probably going give different results or how that app works compared to the other, what's the reason your monitoring it for?

i want to see if there are any viruses or malware running and to check how much processor each application is using as it runs in the background.

As long as you stick to not going to shady sites, download unknown sources your risk is very very slim .

sorry but thats not really answering the question, im afraid. i would like to know why it does this for other reasons, not just checking for viruses.

I would guess it's just how the Governor is programmed to report CPU load. If so, there's nothing that can be done short of rooting and installing a custom Governor.

Sorry we are not engineers to know what demand the CPU requires at a given moment those apps are nice to see the working of a CPU but we don't have that type of knowledge, since you said 2 part to question I was addressing the virus one .

Most likely CPU load will be similar to that of the CPU on a PC in terms of gaming being more CPU intensive, possibly moreso on a phone than on a PC because the phone doesn't have a discrete GPU but relies on an integrated GPU.

Welcome to Android Central! I made you the owner of the original guest post to make it easier for you to find.

There are so many processes that run on a phone -- even if you had accurate information about how much the CPU is running, that won't tell you if it's malware or just one of the apps that came with the phone or that you installed yourself.

Malware/viruses are actually pretty difficult to get, as long as you observe basic security precautions. Review the following:

“I’ve been hacked” - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com
[GUIDE] How To Avoid Malware - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com

If you don't do any of those risky things, then the chance of malware is extremely low.

Also keep in mind that the A20e is a 4 year old budget phone with fairly weak specs back in 2019 that will only seem even more sluggish for today's apps. It would not be surprising to me if the phone's performance has progressively been worsening. I've seen that with my Galaxy Tab A7 lite as well.

Plus, you didn't tell us what the "other phone" is. Same model? Same setup? Same amount of memory? Same signed in accounts?

Same CPU (that's very important)?

As mentioned, there are many things that run in the background on modern phones. Anything that keeps your notifications going - emails, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok... I mean, I don't know what all you have running on your phone, but even the Google app and many of Samsung's background services will keep the cores in that CPU running constantly to some degree.

Also, has it upgraded to Android 11 yet?

Note that the A20e has the mediocre performing Exynos CPU.

If you are comparing it to another phone with the Qualcomm chip in the 600 series range or higher (especially with only 3 GB of ram), that Exynos chip isn't going to compare well at all.
