Why can't I turn on background data?

Can't turn on background data

Google Play Store stopped working on my N7 running Marshmallow.
When launched, I get a message "google play store needs background data to be enabled".
The help page instructs you to go to setting->data usage and tap the menu icon to find the 'allow background data'. However this option does not exist in the menu.
Doing a search also suggests the same thing.

All I get in the menu is 'network restrictions' and 'help and feedback' - none of which contain the background data option. Where on earth is the the background data option?

Any ideas how to fix that mess?

Hello flexwiz, welcome to the forums! Try this. In the data usage screen scroll down until you find Google Play Store, tap on it and make sure that background data is enabled.
