why cant i update to the latest version of android?

i recently purchased a used htc one (m7) of of ebay that was supposedly unrooted and had nothing done to it. when received it i noticed that it was running android 3.5 and i had the option to update to android 4.4.2 so i attempted to update but when it booted back up i got an htc start up screen that had text at the top and bottom that read "entering recovery...this build is for development purposes only and is not to be distributed outside of HTC..ect" then it changed to a screen that had an android on its back with a error message that read

"clockworkmod recovery v6.04.8"
"E: invalid command argument"
"E: invalid command argument"
"finding update package"
"E: unknown volume for path [ internal sdcard : 0/download/OTA_m7 wl kk44..."ect
and a lot of numbers and also
'"E:cant mount internal sd card"
"installation aborted."
"rebooting..."

does anyone know what this means and how i can fix it? i understand a little bit about rooting and such but not a whole lot so i could be missing something. i was just surprised when i saw CWM because the seller insists that phone is unrooted.

Sounds like you bought a demo model. So far as I've seen these devices cannot be updated without root. Even that is sketchy because I do not think you can unlock the bootloader. If I were you I'd search and/or post this at XDA Developers.

If the bootloader is unable to be unlocked then why is it showing that i have cwm

I could be wrong, and someone rooted and installed clockwork. What does it say when you restart while holding down vol? From there you should be able to see locked, unlocked, tampered, or some other message that may shed light on what's going on. However a rooted device would explain not being able to update by normal means.
