Why did the nougat update not work?

I'm a Nexus 6p user and was prompted to download the nougat update, so did this at night when my phone was on charge. After it was all successfully downloaded, the phone went through the usual long process of optimising every app, so I left it to come back to in the morning.

When I did, it was as though nothing had ever happened - the phone still says it's running 6.0.1 and I no longer get an update prompt as it says there are no updates available.

Did you ever figure out why the phone was not updating properly?

How big was the update? If it was 20-21MB then it was just the September security update, which is to prepare your phone for Android N. I just got mine last night (on Verizon).
