Re: Why did virgin mobile drop the htc desire 816

Welcome to Android Central! You'd probably have to ask Virgin Mobile that question. There are probably dozens of reasons why a carrier decides to add or remove a phone from its roster, ranging from special deals with the manufacturer to the age of the phone to customer demand.

I've been wondering the same thing. I bought my phone just a couple of months ago and have been quite pleased with it. The other day I was astonished to see that it was no longer listed on VM's website. Since the phone isn't all that old and the ratings from users on the VM page when VM did carry it were among the highest for all phones VM carries, it's hard to understand. It is the case that Amazon offered the phone for about $50 less than VM, but I'm not sure that's reason enough to stop carrying it, since presumably VM makes money from monthly charges, not just from selling phones.

Virgin knocked out ALL the Midrange Android phones. They just put up an Alcatel for $99 but beyond that you have to get the Samsung for $500. I have no clue what they're doing as Boost Mobile just put up the LG Volt 2 and the LG Tribute 2. I grabbed an HTC Desire 816 off Amazon for $149.99 yesterday and think it's a Steal compared to what it cost a year ago. I'm replacing the LG Tribute I just got earlier this year as at 4GB that phone has Nothing left in memory after just a few apps. I hope to fare better with the 816 and 8GB and already know NOT to update to Lollipop. I was almost going to switch to Boost but I hate switching carriers. Both Boost and Virgin run on Sprints network but I don't know how much leverage they put on them on what they can sell. maybe that has something to do with it.

@1wwtom, I'm interested in what you said about knowing not to update to Lollipop. I've kept my HTC Desire 816 on KitKat 4.4.2, the system it came with. It keeps trying to move to Lollipop, and I keep ignoring it. But I know very little specifically about Lollipop's behavior on the HTC Desire 816. I do know that reports over in the Nexus 7 (2013) forum suggest that Lollipop 5.1.1 is working fine on the Nexus 7, unlike a number of earlier Lollipop versions. But there's almost no info about Lollipop on the HTC Desire 816. I'd love to know whatever you can tell me.

I'd like to know this also. I've had the the 816 for a couple of days and have also held off on updating to Lollipop for exactly this reason. When I updated my 601 to the latest Kitkat, battery life was never the same and so far with the 816 it's worlds away from the 601 after update and I'm very reluctant to update this new phone without some real world results that show me it's not a bad decision.
