Why do I have 5 bars but no signal?

I have At&t and my samsung galaxy 3 is showing i have 5 bars but i have no signal. I use my phone to keep in contact with my family while I'm in class. What do i need to do to fix it?

I have nothing, the only way i can access internet is if im on wifi, i have 5 bars, no signal or 4G or even LTE

Perhaps a new sim card is needed?
