Duplicate contacts when starting new text convo due to google link

I just purchased my S6 tonight. Made the switch from an iPhone 5. My contacts were transferred over via the Verizon app, as well as google.

Is there a way, short of separating every google linked contact from the device contact and then deleting the google contact, to keep from having duplicate contacts show up when starting a new convo? Simply changing "Contacts to Disply" to Phone or even making a custom list doesnt do the trick.

Is there not a way to unsync my google contacts?

Yes there is. Go to Settings -> Accounts -> Google. Then click on the account and unselect everything you wish not to be synced, e.g the contacts.
