why do I have so many duplicate contacts?

I believe the title says it all, but why in my contacts do I have so many duplicates of each contact (usually 4-5 each)? Is there any way to prevent this from happening?

Open your Contacts app, tap Menu, then Accounts. Are there multiple accounts that are syncing contacts? It may be that duplicates are being synced from accounts like Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, etc.
