Why do my picture messages come through as a Group text message?

Group text message when I receive a picture

I have a (new to me) Galaxy Note 3. On the occasions when I receive pictures via text messages, I receive them in a new thread. At the top, instead of reading just ( the the person I'm texting with, it'll read "Me, John" (example), as if it's a group message.

I have the exact same problem except I have a galaxy s6. it also does that if someone sends me a very long message...did u ever figure it out? any help would be greatly appreciated

Are you using the messaging app that comes on the phone or a different messaging app? Most apps will split sms messages over 160 characters and that can be set ant the senders end so there may not be anything you can do. Check your settings to see if there are any changes you can make to adjust this at your end tho. The Picture or mms message is different and is sent over data. It may have been sent to more than one person and that is why you are receiving it as a group text in a separate thread. Again if it is being sent to you and appears this way, the sender may be using a setting or a different app to send the image as to avoid using data charges or the picture may be to big for their messenger to send so they are sending it through a different service to make sending easier.
If this is not the case I don't know and maybe someone else will chime in.

I've signed up due to this issue. I took my phone from Verizon to AT&T and this issue has begun in the interim. I never had this issue before.

It is either APN or carrier related. Unfortunately the store was of little use. A hard reset resolved a battery life issue but the picture messaging thing remains.
