Nobody seems to be able to answer this question. I have an ASUS phone and tablet and also a Samsung phone and tablet. Obviously, the chargers that came with the products charge fine but some generic chargers start don't. I have resorted to using an app called AMPERE that measures the charging rate of my phones and tablets.
The app is very useful to see what is going on. With my Samsung charger on the Samsung phone the charge rate increases from about 400mA and increases to about 1200 mA. When I use a generic 2A charger the rate starts out at about 1700mA and slowly decreases to below 100mA. The generic charger works fine on other products that use a miniUSB. Some other generic chargers work fine, others don't. The same thing happens with the ASUS products some generic chargers work, some don't.
I suspect that the charge rate is software/hardware controlled by the products voltage regulation system . The only way I have found to determine if a charger will work is to look at the charge rate during charging.
It is frustrating to have your phone charging all night to wake up and find the battery dead because you used the wrong charger. I am surprised more people have not complained about this.
