Why do the letters and numbers on the lockscreen turn into white boxes?

The keypad on the lock screen, all the numbers and letters have turned into white boxes. I have to turn off my phone then turn it back on for them to go away. How do I correct this.

Welcome to Android Central! I assume you have a Samsung device--this issue is relatively common, and often goes away with a reboot. If it keeps coming back, try a cache partition wipe, which won't erase any personal data.
