why do we root?

If I root, it's equivalent to a factory reset in terms of having to get everything running again, right? In other words, once I root my device, I'm starting from scratch?

And I'm sure there was something else. Oh yeah and to gain wireless tether. However I got to admit I'm not sure if I like it as much as pdanet so I'm going to have to play around with it a bit more and find out how far I can push it first.

EasyTether is much faster and more stable than PDAnet, try it out.

Why would I do that when I have wifi tether now. Just turn it on and join the network. However I will pass you recommendation along to non-rooted people.

Glad to see some of you guys are trying or have accomplished root. It's thing like this that eventually will get back to carriers and phone manufactures and allow us to have root to begin with! There is so much you can do with root!

Am i the only one who came from the blackberry world of jacking up their phones with a new hybrid os every day and now loving the android world but looked at the rooting instructions and felt like there is no frickin way im gonna get this right?

I was exactly the same. See new hybrid or leak - load within the hour. Now, thanks to Qazme, I'm rooted and feel like a wee school lass on a spring morn!

patches, no one has also mentioned one of the main reason i rooted my incredible, nandroid. nandroid let me do a clone of my phone so i have it incase i get a replacement or something goes wrong ,etc

nandroid is worth it by itself.

plus just removing crap like city id. i also wanted to know if we can remove the 3 verizon backup assistant apps, one is a client ,one is a sync, one is a service i think, lots of constantly running crap draining my battery. plus i use exchange to save/store my stuff so thats enough backup for me. (plus my nandroid)

rooting is a pain def. as is, it took me like 4 days or playing around for a couple hours at a time. i tried many methods, finally i bought a 2gb pny card and i got it on like the 6th try. i flicked the card out right as it vibrated and said htc, and then i clicked it back in right before it sowed the triangle it worked.

i also tried messing with the sd card, making it unusuable, etc, that didnt work though.

i see one draw back of wireless tether is your draining battery fast and when using pda net you are plugged in so your using the laptop to power the phone, but yuou could still just plug it in and use wifi tether.

i am still considering the droid x but not as much now, especially since many are saying the encrypted recovery means the droid x will never see root or roms. but then again they said that with nand lock.
