Why does a 1MB app require me to clear 285MB of space on my phone?

When my flashlight app wouldn't work on my S4, I attempted to uninstall and re-install it. After uninstalling, when I tried to install it, my phone said I needed to clear 256 MB of space. It's a 1MB app. Just for the heck of it, I eliminated 4-5 apps, and tons of old texts, but it didn't make a dent. Something else must be going on. It's 16GB with an SD card (it says total space 29.71GB). I do have a lot of texts, photos & music, but it says there's 361MB available with 34.3MB available on the SD card. Thanks for any help!
