why does android prevent my keypad working whilst on a phone call

when i press keypad keys (e.g. inputting a pin whist calling voicemail) during an active call, the tones do not work
this only started with latest upgrade- i am using Samsung Galaxy note edge s5

Welcome to Android Central! Is it responding to touch, but just not registering a tone? In the Phone app, tap Menu>Settings, and check the various menus for a DTMF setting. You might have to make the DTMF tone longer.

the keypad works but no tones - there is no dtmf opnetion in any of the settings
as mentioned, this only started being a problem with the most recent android operating system update - prior to that there was no problm

in this forum others have had the same problem and fixed it by disabling the car mode, but that doesn't work for me

Can you clarify--do you have the Note Edge, or the S5? They're two different devices.
