Why does google assistant (when turned on) mute my notifications?

I currently have the note 20 - I have my phone set up to where I can hear my notifications sound through my phone and my connect BT headset. When i turn on google assistant -I can no longer hear the notifications come through my phone speakers or through my BT headset -does anyone know why this happens?

Welcome to Android Central! What do you mean by turning on Google Assistant? Do you mean while you're using Google Assistant? Or do you mean that after you use it once, you don't hear the notifications any more?

When you summon the assistant it will mute all sounds or pause media. But it's only for while you're using it. Do you use Google Assistant for that long of a period where you really need to hear your notifications? I don't recall a setting to change this behavior. It assumes that if you need the Assistant everything else can wait.
