Final (hopefully!) Update:
While on Kit-Kat, I ended up just unmounting the SD card every morning, and got excellent battery life. Inconvenient, but it worked.
I even switched to a Samsung MicroSD card, but it made no appreciable difference in the problem.
I just did the Lollipop 5.0 OTA update yesterday, and 3/4 of the way through my first full day with it, Media doesn't even appear on the list, let alone dominate battery usage. Plus, it gives enhanced ability to write to the SD Card, which was often a pain in the a$$ with Kit-Kat.
No problems evident so far with 5.0. Aesthetically, there are things I don't care for, but if it performs well, and the battery lasts, and I don't have to unmount my SD card, then I'm a happy camper.
