Why does my battery life fluctuate

I'm using a Samsung S9+ on android. The device is barely a year old so this is not a worn out battery issue but something else. I'm sort of suspecting tht maybe it's a result of an OS update, but here's the problem:
My battery life (using a day as a charging lifespan) seems to fluctuate in an extreme way. I use the same apps on a daily basis and my habits of use over a 24 hour period are very predictable. If I take my device to work with 75% power, 8 hours later I may have 50% left which is pretty good considering I'm making calls and using internet on breaks. However on occasion I've been down to 15% over the the same period with the same usage and start percentage of power. This is baffling me ! The device remains in my pocket and I work inside so it's not an ambient temperature issue...I'm also using Avast battery saver which alerts me to any apps running in background. Any ideas ? This is really strange.

I agree -- if your cell signal is poor where you work, that can eat into battery. It might just be certain areas of your workplace as well. Use an app like GSam Battery Monitor to get a better idea of what your cell signal strength is throughout the day.

Hi...thanks all. Seems a lot better. Now I'm monitoring it I've made a few adjustments regarding my apps running in the background. Certainly an improvement.
Thanks all
