Why does my messager avatar (initial) only show black and white?

Messager avatar (initial) only shows black and white

My messenger avatar only shows bw. Used to be in color. On note 5. Replaced phone and color is gone. Help.

Welcome to Android Central! And everything else on the phone is in color? Is this in the stock Messenger app, or Google Hangouts?
