Why does my newly bought unlocked Verizon LG G2's apps fail to work in mobile data mode?

Android Central Question

Hi,
I just purchased a used unlocked Verizon-branded LG G2 from a Craigslist seller, and although the phone does work, the apps only work when connected to Wi-Fi. Once the phone is no longer connected to Wi-Fi, the apps stop working. It runs on Android version 5.0.2. I use the same sim card on an unlocked Huawei Honor 5x, and everything works fine. My carrier is Consumer Cellular, which I believe uses AT&T.
I have a tech background, but I don't have much experience with smart phones, so I'm just learning this stuff (I'm a retiree).
Can this be a familiar issue with some phones, or is there something I could try to get the apps to work over mobile data?
Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for answering. No, I haven't contacted Consumer Cellular yet. I will reach out to them. I wasn't sure how much support they would give for a phone that they don't sell, but it's definitely worth a try.

Thanks again.

A Verizon G2 doesn't work on AT&T. CS uses AT&T and T-Mobile, but they're both GSM, so that's fine - but a Verizon phone has CDMA radios, so it can't connect to GSM towers. If you can't reverse the sale, sell it and buy an unlocked AT&T or unlocked T-Mobile (or Consumer Cellular, of course) phone.
