Why does my Nexus 5X have slow LTE on Verizon?

Nexus 5X Slow LTE on Verizon

I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing slow to non-existent LTE speeds on their Nexus 5X with Verizon? My old, non XLTE enabled phone gets 5-8Mbps in the same location that my Nexus 5X gets 1-3Mbps if I am lucky. Often the Nexus is receiving 0.1-0.5Mbps. I've talked to Google, says carrier is the problem. I've talked to carrier, says nothing else they can do because phone isn't a Verizon phone.

Not on Verizon.

Are you using the same SIM card in both phones and seeing different LTE speeds?

Re: Nexus 5X Slow LTE on Verizon

No, my old phone uses a different SIM size. I went to Verizon store and they put a new SIM in it and it seemed to activate ok. I've read forums of people saying that Verizon can't activate a SIM on a non-Verizon phone, but it was seeing voice and data so they said it was working as it should. Is this the problem?

I should also add, when I activated the phone in store I immediately got faster LTE, but shortly after leaving the store the speed went away to practically non-existent. I don't think it's my location because as I said, I get totally usable speed on my old 4G phone in the same location.

You can test this by going back to the store (where you had good speeds) and testing LTE speeds. That would tell whether it is the phone itself or something to do with your location.

Verizon is rather infamous for not being friendly to non-Verizon branded phones....

I'm not seeing issues with my 5X on Verizon.

I just tested to confirm and received 13.56 Mbps down and 8.3 Mbps up. These are inline with the speeds I saw previously on my 2013 Moto X (if not a bit faster).

Re: Nexus 5X Slow LTE on Verizon

Just spent more time with tech support on VZW and we switched the preferred network type from Global to LTE/CDMA and all the sudden I got great network speeds... for about 5 minutes of usage and then it went back to 0.2Mbps and could barely load a web page. Turned phone off and on, great LTE for about 5 minutes, then no connectivity. I don't think this is location based because I *can* get a signal, but then it goes out after using the phone for a little bit.

I would say maybe it is the phone but I have access to another 5X and it has the same problem. Did either of you change any settings to get this phone to work on Verizon?

I simply pulled the SIM out of my Moto X and installed it in my 5X. I've made no changes to data service on the 5X (and have not attempted to get HD voice or simultaneous voice/data working).

Have you tested in safe mode to see if there is an app that might be causing this issue?

Re: Nexus 5X Slow LTE on Verizon

I have confirmed the same behavior in safe mode. After a certain point of downloading website on chrome it just essentially stops working. I get network communication errors. It is unfortunate as I liked the phone in many other ways.

Re: Nexus 5X Slow LTE on Verizon

Have you tried the SIM from the 5X in another phone (non-5X) to see if the issue follows the SIM?

i can confirm. my 5x doesnt work well at all on verizon. im sure verizon has some way to hobble non verizon phones. just makes the move to another carrier that much easier.

+1

Nobody beats VZN in trapping folks into lucrative (for Verizon) "deals." If it isn't good for them, they don't reciprocate ;)

Re: Nexus 5X Slow LTE on Verizon

My 5X works great on Verizon. Really fast...I did change from global to lte/CDMA and enabled roaming. That's about it.

Re: Nexus 5X Slow LTE on Verizon

I had the same issue with my 6P. I would have 1-2mbps but then pop the sim in my 6S plus and would have 13-15mbps. I ended up selling my 6P as a result. I was never able to get an answer.

Re: Nexus 5X Slow LTE on Verizon

I'm getting good results on my 6p on Verizon. Just checked and got 34 Mbps down and 4 up on LTE. I'm using the SIM that I pulled from the Droid Maxx that was my previous phone. Anyway, just wanted to respond for those who might see this discussion and be scared away from considering a 5x or a 6p.
