Why does my Nexus 6 keep saying Checking network connection?

Checking network connection

I factory reset my Nexus 6. Now it keeps saying checking network. Its shows connection in the status bar that it is connected to lte/wifi, but it stays on that screen and does not proceed.

Luckily I have a backup phone, but I would like to use this one. Is this some kind of security measure I missed the memo for?

Sounds like the phone's flatout lying about that wifi connection. Or maybe an app is causing problems?

What have you tried so far? Try toggling wifi and airplane mode to see if that does anything. You can also try forgetting your wifi network and reconnecting. There's always rebooting to safe mode to get around any pesky apps:
