Why does my note 8 stop charging once the screen goes black?

[Android Central Question]

I put my phone on the charger, I walk away for 5 minutes, i come back, and the phone is no longer charging. It only charges for as long as the phone screen stays lit up. Once the screen times out and goes black, it'll charge for another 30 to 60 seconds, and then the red charging light goes out. I'm using the cord that came with the phone, and have even had tmobile send me a new ac adapter, but no new cord. I bought another cord that I use in my car, but it does it there, too. I should not have this much trouble charging a phone.

Safe mode? I don't know how to put a phone in safe mode.
