Why does my S5 battery drain so fast, and why does it run so hot?

I am new to online forums so pardon me if this question has been asked and answered. The phone is just over a year old. I do use it heavily for work every day (emails, calls and texts mostly, facebook and instagram). In the last 6-8 months the battery life has steadily declined. I usually need to recharge it (10% or less batt life) by noon every day. And it runs incredibly hot if I am scrolling facebook or instagram, watching videos, etc. I do not play games on my phone. I even purchased a new battery last week hoping that would help and it has not improved at all. I do use the clean sweep app to clear cached data, etc. But I still have very limited internal storage as well. All of my downloaded apps are on an external sd card to help with storage. HELP!! I am a moron when it comes to this stuff and a new phone is not in the budget yet.

Welcome to Android Central! Charge up to 100%, then let it drain to 20-30% with normal usage, without charging in between. Then show us:


1. The main Settings>Battery screen.
2. The fullscreen battery graph screen (which shows Awake time and Cell Signal Strength).
3. The Screen category (to see total Screen On time).
4. The Cell Standby category, if present (to see Time Without Signal).

If you don't have the option to see Cell Signal strength or Awake time, install GSam Battery Monitor.

Common culprits for battery drain and overheating include poor cell signal and a corrupt file on an SD card. For the latter, go to Settings>Storage, Unmount the card, remove it, and insert it into your computer. Can the computer read these files? One thing to do is to uninstall the clean sweep app... app cleaners, RAM cleaners, speed boosters all do more harm than good and they're not really needed.

You HAVE come to the right place. There are tons of people on this forum that want nothing more than for you to be happy with your phone. Don't ever be afraid to ask questions. If it's been answered somewhere else (and if it's a long answer or something like that) you may see a link to it in someone's response. That's not someone saying "I'm not telling you... go look over there" - it's just because the answer is most likely very in depth like what B. Diddy did above.

That out of the way, what version of Android are you running? You can find that information in the "SETTINGS > ABOUT" and scroll down to "Android Version". Also - who is your carrier (you're in the US, correct)? These things can help troubleshoot because maybe you're on an older version and need to upgrade to get rid of the battery drain.

Please come back to this thread and post your results, and everyone will do EVERYTHING they can to try and help.

Cell signal seems ok. Do you have an SD card inserted? If so, did you already try unmounting the card, in case there's a corrupt file on there?

It would also help to see the list of apps showing their percent battery use. This can tell us if any one app is using an inordinate amount of battery.

I have not removed the SD card yet. But I did check to see which apps are using a lot of battery, and it seems that the Pages Manager app for Facebook is the culprit. I do keep getting messages from Clean Sweep that this particular app runs a lot and overheats the cpu. I force stop it, but the problem persists. I may just need to delete it.

Ah... it's well documented that most of Facebook's apps (Facebook, Messenger, Pages, etc...) are sometimes very buggy. You may have found your culprit. I would suggest uninstalling that app (at least for a little while) and see what your battery looks like. Don't do too much right now or you may not find the exact cause. One step at a time.

Uninstall Pages Manager, reboot your phone, charge it fully then see how things fare. You may even find that if you reinstall it later it will behave better.
