My Samsung Galaxy S3 (Tmobile) intermittently recieves texts from Iphone users

I was never an iphone user and I have always used android phones. Anyways, most of my coworkers and friends have iphones. For some reason a few of them will text me and I will not receive their texts. However, other times throughout the day their texts will send just fine but it seems to be happening more lately. I have other iphone friends that have had no issues texting me. The only possible solution I found was to have them turn on there SMS messaging on their iphone. I tried this with one of my friends and I received her texts more often but It was still not receiving all of them. Any help would be greatly appreciated...Is it because I have a 2nd rate service provider? Is my phone too old? Should I just get rid of my friends?

Thanks,
-Mark

That's mandatory because if they don't, they're sending you iMessages, your phone sees the iMessage as garbage and ignores it.

It's probably because Apple still hasn't made iPhones totally compatible with the non-Apple world. They keep promising "real soon now", but I've been hearing that for years. (And since they won't let anyone else use their iMessage protocol - although I was under the impression that datagram protocols weren't copyrightable - you're never going to see an Android iMessage app unless Apple changes its policy. (No one wants to be the test case. App developers don't have millions lying around in their basements, and that's what it takes to bash heads with Apple, even if you win.)
