Why does my screen go blank when I make a call on my droid xt

When I select contact and call screen goes blank....

When you get it near your face, so you don't cheek-dial. If it does it when it's not near anything and you don't have a screen protector or case blocking the proximity detector (top of the front of the phone), the detector is probably bad.
