why does my wifi only connect when in airplane mode?

I have been trying to connect to wifi so I can update my galaxy s3. First I have to turn the wifi off which I leave on all the time. When I turn it back on I can see all available wifi networks and try to connect to one. ONe minute it will tell me connected and I try the update and then it tells me obtaining IP address. I googled some troubleshooting ideas and I can get my wifi to work and even start the update while in airplane mode. once I turn airplane mode off i lose connection. How do I get it it work without airplane mode?

Re: why does my wifi only connect when in airplane mode?

This is an odd problem usually it's that you cannot connect to network while WiFi is enabled. That's usually due to your device opting for WiFi over costly network data. Meanwhile, I would look for a setting something like Only On Data, or a tick box that says Network or Wifi, there will likely be a setting near one or both of those that says WiFi only... I'm just guessing. Anyway since you seem to be able to connect while not connected to Network try disabling Data. This should give you the same affect as AirPlane mode without cutting off your incoming calls and SMS.

Welcome to Android Central. Does a reboot on the device help?
