Why does the Captive Portal login keep appearing on my phone's activity, even when I'm asleep?

even my phone is off , captive portal login keeps popping up

Are you connecting to a Wi-Fi hotspot belonging to someone else, like an apartment complex or restaurant? Captive portal login is what public Wi-Fi routers use to grant access. When you connect to a public Wi-Fi and it redirects you to a screen asking you to agree to the terms of use, that is the captive portal login in action.

Welcome to Android Central! Do yourself a favor and don't overthink what shows up in your Google Activity. Apps will periodically ping Google servers for various reasons (often just to refresh data) -- it doesn't mean anyone's out to get you. And I've been wishing for a long time that Google would just change the name of that system app to something without the word "captive" in it, because so many people automatically associate a shady purpose with it.
