Why does the Xoom Price seem so bad?

All Xoom's have 32GB of memory and cost $600 from Verizon. A 32GB 3G version of the iPad 2 is $729. Now correct me if I am wrong, but that is $129 less than the iPad 2 for the same features (3G and Memory). Not to mention the Xoom will at some point have LTE, the iPad 2 does not and will not have LTE. I understand you have to take the price of data per month into effect, but all I am saying is that the Xoom should not get a bad wrap for its price. Oh, and Steve Jobs, you realize you're comparing the pricing of your bare minimum iPad 2 to a tablet (the Xoom) that has all of the features of one of your most priciest tablets?

So take it as you may, but all I am saying is that the Xoom price is not as scary as it seems, atleast to me.

Well in order to get that 600 xoom you need a contract for 2 years. So can't compare. Walk out with no contract xoom is 800 ipad what 729. Don't get me wrong the xoom is much nicer with better specs. I had no problem dropping 900 for the xoom case and screen protectors on launch day. Ill never buy a I anything even if it prints money.

True, but even so. 729 and 800 is a 70 dollar difference which is semi-large, but when talking about something like a tablet, it really is not a that big of a deal in my opinion.

And nobody wants or needs a 32 GB 3G iPad. They are all buying the 16GB Wifi model for 499.

Business class seats to London are only 3200 bucks, so why does everyone fly coach for 800?

The Xoom at $800 is expensive but it is NOT over-priced.

Let's look at the comparison between the Xoom and it's closest iPad competitor:

Xoom:
32GB onboard memory
Dual cameras
Dual-Core Processor
$799

iPad 32GB + 3G:
32GB onboard memory

Dual-Core Processor
$729

For that additional $70, you are getting the LTE compatibility, SD card support, higher resolution screen, etc. (hold the comments about some not being currently on the Xoom at this very moment). Also, in Motorola's own defense, they have the added expenses of recouping from their reseller agreements where they take the hit as opposed to Apple making the bulk of their sales/profits direct.

HOWEVER, the HUGE problem (and potential cause of Xoom failure) is Motorola's lack of choice for the user. As gbhil pointed out, not everyone needs/wants a 32GB tablet with wireless compatibility. Some users ONLY WANT the minimal model at an affordable pricepoint. I guarantee that if the Xoom was released in a 16GB WiFi only model for $499 (or even $549), that there would be a lot more Xooms in consumer hands.

So to answer the original question, "too pricey" when looking at the expected retail price, absolutely not. But is the Xoom "too pricey" in general due to lack of other configurations, ABSOLUTELY.

I still own and love my Xoom though.

Yes and no. If you compare it to the similiar iPad model, its not too bad. The problem is, I bet the two most popular iPad models are 16/32gb wifi versions, each much cheaper than the XOOM.

So entry cost is too high, there needs to be a lower end SKU NOW, but the actual model cost isn't.

Its a big "New User" thing with the price.
People aren't used to tablets yet, it's a relatively new product line and the prices are going to be MORE than most people wish, but very seldom are they over priced.

I've never once regretted paying $800.00 + tax for my Xoom and never will.

Why?

I knew EXACTLY what I was getting.
I knew EXACTLY what I could do with it.
I knew EXACTLY what power it had.

I know this probably makes 0 sense to anyone since it's just a jumbled mess of a rant, but thats just how I feel >_<

I don't think the Xoom is bad at all for $800. The Xoom is awesome and I totally love it. IMO, it has plenty of bang for the buck and is exactly what I've been waiting for in terms of a tablet.

The thing that I personally find so interesting is how so many people have purchased only to return. I've read their comments and I just don't get it.

I can't wait for the "I returned it" threads and comments to diminish and the Xoom user experiences, tips and tricks become more prevalent.

Bottom-line, the Xoom is just a bad to the bone tablet! Hats off to Motorola - Thanks Moto!!

I think it is priced too much for the typical user, but I will get at least $800 worth out of it. I thought it was priced too high from the moment the price was leaked.

I've said this before. This is similar to the ps3 vs xbox360 wars. The ps3 came out at a much higher price and those that got it swore it was a much better "value" cos it had the bluray and wifi built in while the xbox did not and had a cheaper "stripped down" model with hddvd and wifi as options you could add after the fact.

We all know how that played out as the xbos is now outselling the ps3 and wii and the ps3 didnt take off till it came down to $300. Moral of the story, CHOICE WINS, its not all about specs and mass adoption of a product occurs when it has a lower opening price point option in addition to higher priced models.

Is the xoom overpriced when evaluated in a vacuum based on specs...NO. Is it overpriced in a market where the $399 and $499 ipad/ipad2 exists....YES. I believe we all live in the latter

I personally don't find it over priced considering it is an LTE device, can be expanded to 64gig/unlimited if you carry SD cards with you and you not buying AV dongles for $40 bucks a pop.

My concern is is it priced too high to attract the number of users that will get developers excited and build tablet based apps? I am still debating if I'll ever use the LTE part vs tethering off an LTE phone so as to avoid two data plans but as I am new to the Andoid world it is tough to leave behind many of my favorite apps that I use on a daily basis. Yes, I'm talking about iPad apps.

As I don't follow/haven't followed the Android dev blogs can anyone shed some light on what they believe will happen with regards to devs and the Markets growth on the tablet apps?

I think $800 would be a fair price at this point in time IF the Xoom was shipped in a complete form with the LTE chip installed--but its not. Considering the hassle that current owners will have to go through to ship it back and then wait--I think the price should have come down at least $50 or so.

I have a feeling that that whole process is going to be a fiasco fraught with delays and possibly damaged units being returned to users. Maybe I'm being pessimistic, but I think it would be better to wait for complete units out of the box.

The whole idea of a lower powered device with a big screen, a OS designed from the ground up for touch, and an assortment of apps designed for that system--came from Apple. As much as I love the Xoom it simply wouldn't exist without the iPad. Google has added some excellent enhancements that are advantages over iOS -- but likewise iOS still has some solid advantages and features over Android and will for some time.

Instead of irrationally hating Apple due to some immature personality/product identification you've made you should be grateful that competing products make innovation possible.

the problem is that everybody is comparing xoom to apple 's ipad. Obviously if you want to be lead by apple, then you will come down to the conclusion that Xoom is competitively priced.

However, if you abandon the hype from apple, you will realize that $800 is enough to buy a very portable laptop that can do a million more things than a tablet.

a good 7" tab will have huge advantage in terms of portability, comparing to a laptop, a 10" tablet, however, is not nearly as portable, so its advantage over a laptop is very small.

only apple can sell fallacy to its fan b o ys, its not a compelling price for anybody else.

The argument that one wouldn't exist without the other is pretty presumptuous. Maybe without iPhones someone else would have invented an eyePhone and I'd be typing this with my retinas.
