Why does this phone have practically no free memory?

So I just played with this phone at a sprint store and I honestly liked it a lot. But there was just one thing that just bugged me as just done badly. This phone on paper has 512 megabytes of onboard ram. My current phone, a hero, has 288 megs of onboard ram. Yet yet my hero has 40 megs of free ram ATM while the epic with double the ram only had 60 megs free. Even when I downloaded taskiller to both devices and deactivated all of the built in apps that were running in the background i came to 160 megs free on the epic... WTF? Why does android suck up so much memory? On top of that when i went into the phones own task manager i found that Of that 512, less than 350 megs were actually recognized by the phone at all. Whatever happened to the other 150+ megs that were supposed to be in the phone? I know they can't be being used by the system and just be unacceptable because for one I can't even come close to completely clearing out the memory the phone does claim it has and second the amount of total ram that is not 512 is static!

Sorry for my first post being a rant but I'm just disappointed. This phone is so promising but that ram thing just sucks. My iPad only has 256 megs of ram and yet without any memory optimization on my part I have 150 megs free right now (I hacked it to add multitasking and a memory meter was a nice plus before anyone asks) why can't android do the same? And why is it that when this Phone was given double the memory of my hero samsung found a way to just lose it all before I even remotely got a chance to touch it? Oh well hopefully someone will find a way to get all that memory back through rooting. Again sorry for the rant and woo first post.

My new Epic has 473MB Internal Phone Storage. I bet the one at the store had a lot of apps installed. And most of them cannot be moved to SD since it's still running 2.1

That's the phone's internal flash memory you are talking about. I'm talking about the machine's RAM.

Where in the setting did you see it? I'm trying to look for it so I can check.

Hold the home button till the settings menu appears and then press the task manager button on the bottom. An app will open and in the app one of the top four tabs will be status or stats or something like that. Anyway within that tab you will see all of the raw data about your phone including how much storage space you have left and the amount of total system memory is in the system and how much of that memory is being used by the machine at the moment.
