Why does WMP convert my mp3s to wma?

The title says it all. When ever i use WMP to transfer music to my phone it converts it from mp3 to wma. Why? The conversion process makes the file bigger and wastes space. I want to know why it does it, and how I can stop it.

But most of them don't step down the bit rate for space. I tried winamp but it seemed a bit off.

Most of them do. But hey, a 32gb sd card. How much does one need? Did you check for a music converter on Google?
