Why doesn't available space SD CARD on Galaxy S4 seem correct?

Just recently got this phone. I have put in a 32Gb memory card and when I check to see how much space there is on it ....it says 29 something GB which is fine. Yet when I try to do an app backup, it says there is only some 7Gb of free space. I have wiped the card and still no difference. Can anyone help ?
