Hi.

Just bought a 32gb nexus 7.

When I go into Settings then Storage it says I only have 13gb total space and 12gb free, when I would expect it to say about 32gb total and 28gb free. I have only downloaded about 5 apps!!!!

I am guessing there is a problem and need to take it back to Argos?

Thanks.
Craig

It sounds like you have a 16gb N7, not a 32gb N7.

Agreed.....that is about the amount of free space you end up with a 16 GB Nexus 7.

Sent from my Nexus 7 using Android Central Forums

Actual space vs advertised space:
When a Byte is not a Byte

If you want to verify what space you really have, plug your N7 into a computer and check it there.

I believe I also had this problem when I first bought my N7, but I also already knew the information given above (don't remember too well). My problem was that the Storage menu was saying I had less/more Total and Available space than I should have had. I believe the Storage menu excluded files that were placed in folders that I created and was misreporting numbers. Since the updates, it now lists a 'Misc' section that correctly totals files I've placed on the tablet in non-default folders and Total/Available space is being reported correctly. Not sure about the exact reasons for any of this, but that's how I remember it.

I have installed all updates and its still wrong. I will plug it into my laptop to check, thanks.

Just take it back. Either they gave you the wrong one in the store, in which case it will have a sticker on the box saying it is a 16GB, or they put it in the wrong box at the factory.

How bout posting a screen shot (hold power n volume down buttons down for a sec) of your settings> storage>

I also just bought a 32GB Nexus 7 and it is also a 16GB unit. The storage settings say it has 13.36GB of space and plugging it into my laptop says the same thing. The box the tablet came in definitely says its 32GB, and the box was sealed, so this is obviously happening at the factory. I would definitely advise anyone who bought a 32GB Nexus recently to double check to make sure they got what they paid for.

Storage info on a 32GB model should show as that pic in Post #8 above: 27.56GB or 27.58GB for Total Space

Easy to check and should be no issues exchanging it if the serial matches the box (that of course shows 32GB) - 3rd line from the bottom on the left of the box's label should show 32GB

Did this ever get resolved? I know someone who recently bought a sealed 32gb device but it only shows total storage of 13gb...even though the model/serial numbers match the device with the box of the 32gb model...was this an error on Google's part?! Will they take the return? It's been over the return period of the store it was originally purchased from.

If the store won't correct the problem, tell your friend to call the Google Nexus help line directly at 855-83-NEXUS. This is clearly an error that either the store or Google should correct regardless of how long the person has owned the device.

Thanks for the quick response! He actually sent me a screenshot of the storage space...I have a 16gb one myself and I noticed that mine says 13.43GB total space, so even if Google messed up and badged/boxed a 32gb with 16gb hardware, wouldn't it be the same 13.43GB total space instead of 13.36GB? (I'm wondering if it's a software issue that can be fixed?)

That's awfully close, so regardless of the minor difference, it's clearly not the right amount of storage. Tell him to call Google.

You know what? I just noticed that the 13.36 GB storage amount is the same as the other user NES_Rules was reporting! It seems that this has happened before. Unfortunately, it wasn't purchased directly from Google, it was through a retailer and it's beyond their short return date...hopefully ASUS will help fix the issue.

I bought my 32GB N7 with cellular back in February. Never thought to double check the space available the first day but mine is a 32GB with 27GB free as it should be.
