Why my typing indicator doesn't show when someone is texting me on hangout

Welcome to Android Central! Hangouts is being phased out soon, so that might be part of it. Try using Google Chat instead, which is where Hangouts is migrating to.

Pretty much is phased out , maybe try telegram?

We had Hangouts for our CrackBerry Moderators group, and we gladly ditched it for Signal, because it was getting so hinky.

Honestly, Google Chat (which works very much like Hangouts) has been totally fine for me. I like its integration into Gmail as well.
