Why don't Hi-Res photos work for contact photos?

It's been a problem for a long time, so yes, everyone has the same problem,

They work, but the contact photo display is a low res display, so you'll see the same thing no matter what the picture was originally (except that the quality is better if the picture doesn't have to get resized).
