Why has Marshmallow slowed my phone down so much?

I have a Motorola G 2nd Gen- it's not the fastest of phones, I know, but it was doing just fine until I got around to updating to Marshmallow. Now it's slower than Internet Explorer and is frustrating me to no end. Why has a supposedly-better OS put my phone into a coma, and how can I get it back?

Have you tried clearing your cache partition? After a major update it's generally a good idea to clear your cache or reset your device.
