Why has my Earphone mic stopped working?

Earphone mic does not work

I use a wired mono earphone piece and it worked fine, suddenly the mic does not work. In fact when earphone is plugged in I cannot talk to text; so the mic seems to cut it out. can anyone help me with settings for this?
by the way...its the same with other earpieces so I know its not the earpiece.

I just checked through Google Now, and don't see anything that would change a setting which may be affecting this feature. I suspect that it might be related to the headset - let us know if you find an alternative/fix.

Hi; I appreciate your effort. Actually I was surprised to try a second wired earphone (exact same one in fact) and it worked fine. So it is obviously a problem with the first earphone. The strange thing is it works fine on my laptop but not with my phone. I tried cleaning it, etc. ...just does not work.
