Why HTC will not sell many HTC One (M8)s

Myself and everyone on this forum are pretty well aware of the latest development of the phone world. However we are a small minority. The M8 has been out for four days now and I haven't seen a single advertisement for the device anywhere. Not on the internet, T.V. or in stores. So I went to Best-Buy yesterday to check it out. I did not see the phone on display anywhere, nor did I see any display mentioning it's availability. I did see the S5 on display, despite it on releasing until the 11th.

The average consumer will not have any idea of its existence and this is dangerous for HTC. I understand they simply do not have the marketing budget as other companies. What can HTC do in this situation. The M8 is a beautiful device that deserves to be sold, it's unfortunate that HTC is in this current financial predicament.

They will have to rely on the commercials they can put out and carriers pushing it. I mean besides Apple and samsung that's what everyone else relies on. They don't have to sale as many phones and Samsung and Apple to be successful. But they do need to sell a lot and will have to get creative while dealing with a smaller budget. Hope for the best.... For competition's sake.

Yea man, I hear ya. Last year there was a huge banner advertisement at my Verizon store. This time there was nothing but 2 display models. I've done as much of my own advertising as possible for them on Facebook and a Twitter. Lol

Kinda sucks. I always wondered did the second versions of phones do as well as the first version (if the first version sold well).. Hmm.. there definitely needs to be more advertising, though.

Genius analysis. Guess what? HTC doesn't have the ad budget of Apple or Samsung. They tend to dump their money into R&D. That limits their ability to market to the mass market, but it means they don't include gimmicky features that no one will use just to support another add that touts their ability to track your eyes and pause video.

Your point is well taken, but also overstated.

i've seen that gary oldman commercial probably 15 times already.

that being said, it's not a very good commercial, but far better than the crap samsung put out advertising their new tablets.

The Samsung commercials range from great to painful.........but they still keep themselves in front of the buying public.
Does McDonald's make the best burger? No but they sell more in a day than most do in a month combined.
Some of the best ideas and products have failed do to a lack of attention.
On the other hand, look at the success of many bad products simply due to great marketing.

Oh and nobody is talking about whether HTC has the money or not to advertise.....just stating that they are not doing a very good job compared to Samsung, Apple, etc. for whatever reason.

I've probably seen all variations of the Gary Oldman commercials 30 times in the last 3 or 4 days. I've also seen a couple of Verizon commercials advertising it. I've been in 5 or 6 Verizon stores (I have AT&T but I've been frantically searching for the dot view case) and all of them have big posters advertising it.

Honestly I remember the m7 commercials from last year with the bands playing backwards, those are what really swayed me to actually buy the phone.

I'm not saying they have the best marketing department, it's well known that they don't have a huge budget but their ads are very prevalent in my area. Now that doesn't mean they can't improve, I'm just saying in my area they actually have a marketing presence.

I live in NYC and I keep saying ads for the phone. I've also seen that Gary Oldman ad on TV about 700 times now.

In my ignorant opinion, HTC can advertise in the same manner as Samsung (frequency, theme, and target market) and won't come close to generating the sales of Apple or Samsung. Samsung has already done a successful job of presenting themselves as a viable alternative to Apple and I believe that impression has had a long lasting effect in the mind of the overall buying public.

The M8 could have matched the S5 spec for spec and feature for feature, and it still won't come close to generating relatively impressive numbers (in my opinion). Based on what I've observed in brick and mortar stores, Samsung and Apple appear to have prime locations and kiosk setups to attract potential buyers. Also, at the point of sale, if the sales person is motivated to recommend an Apple or Samsung product whether it's due to personal bias or confidence in the product's ability to convince the buyer to commit.

Lastly I'll use a fallacy to address another fallacy regarding brand recognition, features, and how they are "supposed" to help improve sales. LG has nearly every feature and spec of Samsung, including removable batteries, SD Card slot, high MP camera, etc. They have the brand recognition for electronic and appliance products and have been able to manufacture multiple Nexus products. In spite of those facts, they do not achieve the same level of sales as Apple or Samsung. So I personally believe that features and marketing are not the sole factors for having competitive sales, if the LG example is an indicator.

Apparently, HTC's putting more focus in advertising for the M8, and demand for the handset in Taiwan is so high, there's not enough supply to meet demand.

Things are looking good for HTC, for now.

I was at a Best Buy yesterday and they had a gold One M8 on display prominently at the front of the mobile area. Was able to look it over and mess with it for a while. Actually it's a lot more impressive in person. The screen is AMAZING and it didn't feel heavy at all.

FWIW, I read today that while their share is still comparatively small (8%) LG is the fastest-growing Android phone mfr in the US ...it appears that all the things you mentioned are giving them some traction against the Appsung juggernaut.
