Why I have an iPad and prefer it to my Nexus 7

I read. I read a lot. I have yet to find an Android tablet that is as flexible as my iPad mini, because I have all my books on iBooks, Google Play Books, and Barnes and Noble on the iPad. What I am wishing for is a 7-8" ePaper tablet using Android that is NOT Amazon, B&N, or other, which allows me to d/l the Kindle App, the Google Play Books, Kobo app, and even iBooks onto it, with a resolution of at least 1600x1200 or better (my eyes are getting older *sigh*), and 32+ gb of memory or Google to play nice with Apple and allow iBooks to be used on the Nexus 7 or later series of tablets.

I prefer Android to IOS, but for entertainment, IOS is still somewhat better, with Android making strides fast. Android is a more serious o/s than IOS. In my family I am the only Android hold out, all the kids and my wife have iPhones, I have the HTC M7, and plan on upgrading to the M8 unlocked edition RSN. Mi Esposa was given a Nexus 7 tablet for Christmas as an e-reader, and loves it.

Anyone else want a good reading tablet that is not hard locked into a proprietary bookstore?

Welcome to Android Central! Have you looked at the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 of S 10.5? The Super AMOLED screen is quite nice, and the tablet itself is very thin and light.

The closest thing to what you want is an onyx t68. 6.8" eink screen, 1440x??? resolution, running Android but kind of poorly because of the low eink refresh rate.

Regardless of hardware, you do not need to use any proprietary software. You just need to remove DRM and use any reader software that can read mobi or epub. Use calibre to format convert. Google Alf apprentice for DRM removal.

Unfortunately I haven't found any software on android as good as Marvin or Stanza on iPad, and I've tried them all. Same thing with RSS reader.

The issue is not the Nexus 7, it is iBooks. Google isn't preventing you from using iBooks on your Nexus...Apple is.

If you can get the ePub files off your iDevice (good luck), an number of Android apps will read them. Aldiko is probably the best one. ePub files are DRM free, just like MP3s are for music.

I bought a Nexus 7 2013 a little over a month ago. Even a year after release, it is an awesome tablet. Great display (1920 x 1200 resolution...Retina-level ppi), fast CPU, GPS, Bluetooth. The Nvidia Shield was the first tablet I have seen that I would even consider replacing it with.

Personally, I don't like reading on tablets because there are too many possible distractions for me. I like ereaders or physical books.

Having used a tablet, I will never buy a physical book again unless I have no choice. I can read in the dark, carry my entire library with me all the time, adjust fonts to my liking. Physical books have the advantage of battery life, but thats about it.

The last time I paid for a physical book was probably 3 years ago.

+1 to Jeff. Well, mostly -- I read magazines on my tablet; and books occasionally. I prefer the Kindle for books, but I like sitting outside reading and hard to beat e-ink display in the sun. The embarrassing part about this for me personally is that I work in the printing industry :/

I agree, the Nexus 7 2013 is a superb tablet, the wife and I both have the 32 gb model. Nirvana to me would be a 300 ppi, 32 gb, 8" e-paper tablet with vanilla Android. For some reason I tried Aldiko, and maybe it was just me, I could not get it to work right for some reason. For me, at least, the 8" size seems to be ideal to carry and travel with. I am in an Apple household for phones (except for my HTC), but the kids have Nook HDs, Nexus 10, and an old gen 1 iPad, plus the wife and kids all have iPods. I must admit that the iPod touch beats the stuff out of any Android player at this time. I just wish that Google would come out with an iPod touch competitor.

The display on the Nexus 7 is why I got it over anything from Samsung or others, because the resolution of the screen for reading. As I get older (50+) I don't tolerate lower resolution screens for reading. I just wish that someone would deliver an 8" class Android tablet with 32 or better gigabytes of ram, SD slot. I would get one in a New York minute.

I have decided what I really want is an e-paper type tablet that is in the 8" range of size with a resolution of at least 1600x1200 (1920x1400 preferred) 32+ gb of ram, plain vanilla Android o/s that allows me to add the Kindle, Nook, PDFs, and iBooks apps so I can d/l all my books in one place. So until that comes to pass, I will stick with the iPad mini retina so I can have all my books in one place.

I want to express that my new Samsung Galaxy TabS2 beats my iPad mini, and has become my daily traveller.
