I upgraded to the Evo from the Palm Pre. I LOVED my Pre and really didn't have any issues with it. However, the Evo represents a substantial upgrade to me from the Pre for the following reasons:
1. Screen. The Evo's screen is big and beautiful. I used to want the smallest smart phone available. Now I can't see myself ever going smaller than the Evo's huge screen.
2. Google Voice. I use my Google Voice number as my work number. With the Evo (and any Android device) I can seamlessly make all calls from my Evo while showing my Google Voice number as my caller ID. Also, Google Voice allows me to play voicemail right from the Evo without having to dial my voicemail number. I love it.
3. Battery. My Evo seems to have about 30-percent better battery life than my Pre. I don't know why I get such better battery life, and I don't really care. Battery life on the Evo is something I don't worry about too much.
4. Keyboard. I was a moderately fast at typing on the Pre's keyboard. I would rate the Pre's keyboard as "good" and the Pixi's keyboard as "very good". However, now that I have had a few weeks to get used to the onscreen keyboard on the Evo, I'm typing much faster using the onscreen keyboard with it's auto-correct features. After some practice, my thumbs seem to fly effortlessly over the on-screen keyboard with very good accuracy. I've never used an iphone, so I can't compare the keyboard to it, but I've used the dedicated keyboards on the Pre, Pixi, Centro, and Treo. The Evo's keyboard beats them all hands-down. I've tried ShapeWriter a little and haven't tried Swipe, but I much prefer the stock keyboard because it is fast and easy.
5. Browsing. I use Dolphin HD on the Evo. Easy tabbed browsing, reflowing of the text while zooming in, image viewing, double-tap to zoom. On my old Palm OS phones, I loved Xiino for web browsing because it would reflow the text. The Pre never figured out how to reflow the text when I zoomed in, so many web pages were hard to read because I would have to pan back and forth to see the whole line. Dolphin HD beats the Pre's browser - no contest.
6. Calendar. This was a weak point on the Pre. With Calendar Pad and its full-screen widget, it is easy to see my appointments at a glance for the entire month.
7. Apps. A few of my important apps seem to work better on the Evo (Evernote, Lastpass, Remember The Milk) and a few don't yet exist on the Pre (google Sky map, Google Voice, Dropbox).
I'm not trying to bash the Pre. I loved that phone! It was the best phone choice on Sprint when it was released. But it's a whole new world for smartphones these days and WebOS has fallen behind. Count me very happy with my Evo!
