Why is galaxy 6 on Nougat 7 not showing icon badge notifications for unread messages ?

I have cleared cache/data on badge provider, as well as force stopped and restarted phone. Checked that notifications were set to 'on'. I get brief top of screen notification but no badge icon # of unread messages. Please help!!

Welcome to Android Central. The individual apps have to support badging. If you don't see it then the app itself most likely does not support that function.
